Job Perks Employee Want

What do top candidates want most?  The answer isn’t always “money,” “prestige,” or “the corner office.”  Instead, top candidates can often be encouraged to stick with a company that offers them a range of nontraditional perks.  Many of these “job perks” are inexpensive for the company to offer, but mean a great deal to the employees.

Some of the top job perks on candidate wish lists include:

  • Tuition Reimbursement.
Top candidates tend to share a zeal for learning.  Turn this trait to your company’s advantage by offering these candidates the chance to enroll in a degree-granting online education program while working for the organization, and offer to pick up some or all of the cost.  This “perk” encourages employees to improve and diversify their skill sets while creating a sense that the company cares about them as people, not just workers.
  • Flexible Scheduling.
Striking the proper work-life balance can be particularly tough for top talent, who tend to be “workaholics” in love with what they do.  Encourage these employees to get the rest their creative brains need to thrive by allowing workers options like flex time and telecommuting.  Flexible scheduling gives workers the space they need to recharge or take care of pressing family problems, increasing their productivity on the job.
  • Comfortable Work Spaces.
By making the office workspace itself a place where people want to be, you draw high-quality employees to your workplace and encourage them to stick around.  If you have limited ability to change the space you currently have, consider adding a comfortable break room employees can use to relax, think through a tough problem, or collaborate on a new project or idea.
  • Free or Discounted Memberships.
Many service providers will gladly “team up” with companies to provide free or discounted memberships, services, and other items.  Free, discounted, or subsidized memberships in everything from professional organizations to gyms helps employees do better work.  It also fosters a sense that the company cares about the long-term health and productivity of its people, making them more likely to care about their own long-term relationship with the company.
